Sydney for Kids: 18th Biennale of Sydney

Looking for something fun to do with the kids tomorrow? It's going to be glorious, so it's the perfect opportunity to head down to Sydney Harbour and take the free ferry to Cockatoo Island to see part of the 18th Biennale of Sydney. We took a picnic last weekend and soaked up the glorious harbour views and art all around us. The Biennale's theme was All Our Relations and here are a few snapshots from our trip for those of you unable to make it:

I think my favourite artwork was the midden of rock oyster shells and tea cups by Jonathon Jones. The tea cups camouflaged beautifully and it wasn't until closer inspection that we discovered the crockery amongst the shells. I love the analogy of traditional aboriginal customs colliding with British tea-time custom; quite fitting in the middle of Sydney Harbour where I'm sure many of those encounters were made between the traditional land owners and the new British colonists in the late 1700's.

The kids loved the installation by Ewa Partum - thousands of letters of the alphabet scattered around the courtyard at the top of the island. They kept busy throwing them into the air and spelling out words with the letters they found.

The 18th Biennale of Sydney is a free event at several art precincts around Sydney and runs until the 16th September 2012. Sundays are Family Fun days with craft stations dotted around the island, and $2.50 unlimited public transport on most bus, train and ferry serives around Sydney all day too.
